The following material is extracted from the "In Memoriam" Booklet (undated) prepared after Bishop Anson's death. It gives an idea of how his contemporaries viewed the work of Bishop Anson.

The title page, the back page and the list of donors and donations are omitted from the following extract:

Bishop Anson :: Memorial Fund.

At the Twenty-fifth Anniversary Meeting of the Qu'Appelle Association, held in St. Paul's Chapter House on 23rd June, 1909, the following resolution was unanimously adopted: "That this Meeting desires to commemorate the work and labours of Bishop Anson for the Diocese of Qu'Appelle by some permanent memorial which shall benefit the Diocese. The nature of the memorial shall be decided by the Council of the Association after consultation with the present Bishop of Qu'Appelle."

At the meeting of the Council it was decided to send the following cablegram to the Bishop of Qu'Appelle: "That the Council suggests an Endowment for St. Chad's Hostel as Memorial to Bishop Anson, but awaits your decision." The reply from Dean Sargent was, " Endowment of St. Chad's decided upon."

Bishop Anson was the first Bishop of Qu'Appelle and was consecrated June 24th, 1884. After eight and a half years of most self-sacrificing work for the Diocese he resigned in December, 1892, on account of health, feeling he was not strong enough to carry out efficiently all the work he knew the Diocese required, but his love for and interest in the work of the Diocese of Qu'Appelle never lessened. He was President of the Qu'Appelle Association, never missing the annual meeting, and he himself always celebrated at the yearly Celebration in St. Paul's Cathedral on St. John Baptist's Day, the Festival Day of the Association.

One of his great wishes while Bishop of Qu'Appelle was to establish a Training School for Clergy in the Diocese, and this he started at St. John's College, Qu'Appelle. At that time the Diocese was not developed enough for the College to be a success, but St. Chad's Hostel, now opened in Regina, can only be considered a continuation and development of the work which he began, and he it was who chose the name St. Chad (the Patron Saint and missionary founder of Lichfield) for the reconstructed work. The Hostel is a work of great interest and hopefulness, and was watched by Bishop Anson with deep sympathy. It is on this account that the present Bishop of Qu'Appelle thinks that to raise an Endowment for the Hostel would be the most suitable memorial to Bishop Anson, enabling the work he had so much at heart to be carried on in perpetuity.

The Hostel has already done good work under its first Warden, the Rev. C. R. Littler, who, we regret to say, has been obliged to resign the Wardenship on account of ill-health. The Bishop has appointed Archdeacon Dobie as his successor, and it is hoped that his long experience of work in the Diocese, - having been ordained by Bishop Anson and having worked ever since his ordination in the Diocese of Qu'Appelle - may enable him to continue the good work begun by Mr. Littler.

It is of the utmost importance that all pecuniary anxiety in connection with the working of the Hostel should be lessened as much as possible, if the work is to be carried on to be the benefit to the Diocese it now promises to be. It is for this reason, we most earnestly ask those who cannot themselves go to the Mission Field, to help by their contributions, to bring the fulfilment of our LORD'S last order: "Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature." In no way can we show so well our love and reverence for the memory of our first Bishop, than by helping forward in this way the work he had so much at heart, until GOD called him to his well-earned Rest.

It is also proposed to place a memorial brass in St. Peter's Pro-Cathedral, at Qu'Appelle, recording the memorial endowment and the work of the late Bishop Anson.

Commendatory Letter from the Lord Bishop of Lichfield.

My DEAR MRS. BURN,
The proposal you make for commemorating my dear friend Bishop Anson's self-sacrificing work as first Bishop of Qu'Appelle, in organizing the new Diocese, and giving a stimulus to the spiritual life of the emigrants from our shores to North-west Canada, cannot but commend itself to all who feel, as I do, that the effect of his labours in Assiniboia is more permanent and more far-reaching than we in this country have yet fully realized. The fruits of his devotion, his single-hearted love for souls, and his saintly life, are showing themselves even now in unexpected quarters. His memory should be cherished by members of our Church in his Diocese, and by all who take interest in the Missions of our Church throughout the years that are to come.
Believe me, My dear Mrs. Burn,
Yours very sincerely,
(Signed) AUGUSTUS LICHFIELD.

THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY, when sending his donation, said: "I am glad that it (the memorial to Bishop Anson) should take the shape of help for a Diocese which needs help so much."
