The Gospel: Our Confidence
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life."         (John 14:6)

In his second address Bishop Gregory focused on 'The Way'.

What is meant by 'The Way'? It has several meanings in scripture. In its first meaning it is a general term, roughly equivalent to the road. But in faith, it becomes a metaphor for life's journey. It is this meaning which underlies the theme of the journeys of the Patriarchs. Their journeys are journeys grounded in faith.

It is no coincidence that the Book of Exodus starts with the story of the Passover. The events which marks the beginning of the journey through the wilderness to the Promised Land. In the New Testament these same things are echoed in Matthew 7:13, 14.

"Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it. For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few that find it. (NRSV)
Likewise in the Book of the Acts of the Apostles the term 'The Way' is used many times.

In John 14:6 the term 'the way' encapsulates all of the above meanings. Further in John's Gospel we should see the parallels to the Exodus story. Jesus is the Paschal Lamb. The reference to the water and the spirit echoes the journey in the wilderness. The goal in Exodus in the Promised Land but in Jesus the Promised Land is not a place (Israel) but means to live with God. In Paul's' writings, he talks about Jesus as the cloud and rock of the Exodus story. Paul's' writings to the Romans tells how our lives are changed by Christ.

We are on a journey which leads us to the promised life through Jesus.
