DIOCESE OF QU'APPELLE
The 73rd Synod of the Diocese of Qu'Appelle
Reports

World Mission

Since our last Synod:
  1. 7 people from our diocese travelled to Lichfield Diocese in June 2004 to participate in Lichfield's Year of Justice and Care. They were Ron de la Hey (Grenfell), Elaine Hanson (Ft. Qu'Appelle), Ed and Bev Bath (Maple Creek), Donalda Ford (All Saints, Regina), Debbie Hubick (Weyburn), Catherine Harper (Weyburn). The group was commissioned at the Cathedral on Sunday, March 21.
  2. Lorna Cross and Jan Harris, who participated in exchanges to Lichfield, developed mission teams composed of some members from prior exchanges. They also developed a number of workshops and have indicated their willingness to conduct mission events within parishes in the diocese.
  3. Visitors from our Companion Diocese of Lichfield
Terry and Helen Thake - April 30 to May 3, 2004 - Terry met with the mission team and led a training session with them.
David Chantrey - June 8 - 18, 2004 David visited parishes in Swift Current Archdeaconry and in Moose Jaw. He spoke about the St. Chad Trust Placement which allows for a person between the ages of 18 to 35 to be placed within a parish in Lichfield, as a parish lay assistant, for a period of 6 months to a year.
Neil Bradley stewardship officer for Stoke in the Diocese of Lichfield visited our diocese and met with our then Stewardship Officer, Tanya Condo
Michael Sheard - May 2006 - Michael attended several sessions of Provincial Synod and was present at the consecration and installation of Bishop Gregory. He also visited a number of parishes in the Diocese and introduced CrossTalk, an opportunity for parishes to become linked with parishes in Lichfield
Alan Smith, Bishop of Shrewsbury, represented the Bishop of Lichfield at the consecration and installation of Bishop Gregory
Paul and Beryl Gratz - May 2006 - Paul is chair of the World Mission Committee in Lichfield Diocese. He and Beryl attended a number of sessions at Provincial Synod and also attended the consecration and installation of Bishop Gregory, and visited with friends in the diocese.
  4. CrossTalk Six parishes in the diocese offered to be part of a 'mission prayer partnership' with a 'twin' church in Lichfield. To date St. Alban's (Moose Jaw), New Sumner, St. Giles (Estevan) and Chinook parishes have been matched with a Lichfield parish. All Saints (Weyburn) and St. Matthew (Regina) Are waiting for a partner church.
CrossTalk is described by Lichfield diocese as follows:

Each partner church will exchange news about themselves and their local community, so that they can pray with real understanding for each other, compare parish mission programmes and reflect prayerfully together on their strengths and their 'growing points'. E-mail makes this an exciting possibility today as never before. We can swap pictures and even video clips as well as words.

The commitment is to pray faithfully - in public worship, in house groups and in private - for a limited two-year period (mid-2006 until July 2008).

Then, in July 2008, the Lichfield church/parish will welcome a small team of four people from their overseas partner church to visit them for two weeks of 'sharing'. This can take whatever form seems appropriate to the partners as they think and pray together: a parish mission, a time of study, a children's or youth programme.

The overseas guests will also be invited, together with representatives from their host parish, to share in an international mission conference from 7-9 July 2008, when we hope to be joined by each of the bishops from our companion dioceses as they come here for the Lambeth Conference.

We continue to appreciate the very strong links that have developed between our diocese and the diocese of Lichfield. On May 5, 2007 Ng Moon Hing will be consecrated as the fourth bishop of the Diocese of West Malaysia. This occasion will provide a welcome opportunity to re-establish links with this diocese as we send greetings and prayers to the diocese and its new Bishop. Although we have not received specific prayer requests from West Malaysia, parishes in our diocese are encouraged to continue praying for the Bishops, clergy and people of that diocese.

Respectfully submitted, Canon Marilyn Dean
